Mahama is accused by Wontumi of supporting independent candidates in an effort to erode the NPP’s base

Mahama is accused by Wontumi of supporting independent candidates in an effort to erode the NPP’s base. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He has sparked a new debate in Ghanaian politics by alleging that former president and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama is supporting independent candidates who recently broke with the NPP.

During Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign trip of the Bekwai Constituency, Wontumi expressed his concerns about Mahama’s purported plan to split the NPP’s support base, especially in the Ashanti Region, a longtime NPP stronghold, in an exclusive video that was shared with muftymedia.com.

Speaking to a passionate group of NPP supporters at a rally, Chairman Wontumi described an incident that, in his words, demonstrated the extent some people will go to in order to discredit the NPP.

The candidate’s purpose, Wontumi stated, was to obtain his support in an attempt to defeat Joseph Osei-Owusu, widely known as Joe Wise, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Ashanti Bekwai.

Nyame asked for his permission to break Joe Wise’s hold on the constituency, and Wontumi revealed, “He came to me with a bottle of Schnapp and some money.”

But according to Wontumi, he refused to back down and urged the candidate to support Joe Wise for the party’s overall success.

However, Wontumi believes that the NDC is behind a wider plan because the candidate supposedly declined and decided to run as an independent instead.

The strategy is to disrupt the party from within, he claimed, adding, “He knows the strength of the NPP, especially in our strongholds, so he’s using these independents to try and chip away at our support.”

He believes that independent candidates are “acting under Mahama’s influence,” secretly collaborating with their NDC counterparts to undermine the NPP’s regional clout.

Wontumi believes that succeeding in 2024 depends on the NPP remaining together. He reassured the audience that “no amount of scheming will succeed against us as long as I remain the Governor of the Ashanti Region.”
